Exodus 20: 3, 5
You shall have no other gods before
me…. You shall not bow down to them or worship them.
God is
Spirit and those who worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in truth. The
bible tells us in many places and at many occasions that we must never turn away
from the true God and worship idols.
In 2 Kings
we read of an eight year old King Josiah who came to power and he obeyed God’s
command and destroyed the pagan altars and destroyed all the Asherah poles. He
also cleansed out the temple where there were temple prostitutes that profane
the worship of God.
Throughout
the history of Israel, there are so many times that the people would turn from
God and turn to idols. This was mainly due to the weakness of marrying foreign
women who brought idol worship into the nation. Some of the kings married
foreign women and some of the men of Israel also married foreign women.
This was the
main cause for turning away from God as the men were led astray by their wives.
In the New Testament we are also reminded by Paul that our young men and young
women must also not be unequally yoked.
This means that our children must not
be married to non-Christian spouses.
As the
nation of Israel has turned away from God because of this, therefore our
children too must be protected from marrying unbelievers who would eventually entice
them away from Jesus Christ.
