Luke 9: 23
Whoever wants to be my
disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.
Jesus reminds us that once we have decided to follow Him,
there must be a dramatic change in our lives. The change must be that our old
lifestyle must be removed and we need to have a new lifestyle which is focused
upon the values of Christian living.
To help us to get along, Jesus said that He would send us a
helper who is the Holy Spirit. He will become our comforter and advocate. Jesus
said in John 14:16-17 And I will pray
the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you
forever—the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither
sees Him nor knows Him, but you know Him, for He dwells with you and I will be
in you.
Jesus said that the world does not know the Holy Spirit and
they cannot receive the Holy Spirit. Only believers of Jesus can have the Holy
Spirit for He resides in each of us.
The work of the Holy Spirit is also to point the world of
unbelievers to Jesus Christ and He will guide us into all truth. We ae also
told by Paul in Roms 8:11 that the Spirit is the source of life. ‘But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus
from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give
life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.’
The evident of having the Holy Spirit in us proves that we
have a new relationship with God the Father. In Roms 8: 9 But you are not in
the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if
anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
In vs 14- 16 For as
many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not
receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of
adoption when we cry out ‘Abba, Father.' the Spirit himself bears witness with
our spirit that we are Children of God.
This is the privilege and advantage that we have, the Holy
Spirit cares for us and He prays for us. Only believers in Jesus have this and
no one else.
